Showing Tips -
by Tim
Lavan
Listed below are some tips for you as an
exhibitor to know before and while you
are in the show ring. When you leave,
enjoy your win or placements!
Before you go into the Ring
-
Check your alpaca from head to toe.
Check the bite. Check feet and remove
any dung. Check the tail and remove any
dung underneath the tail. Check for
testicles if a male. (You are allowed to
trim dung off the tail area and please,
do.)
-
Make sure your halter is on properly and
your lead is securely attached.
-
Make sure the alpaca's toenails are
trimmed. Long toenail growth can effect
their gait.
-
Please have your lead rope properly
figure 8 folded in your hand and nice
slack on your lead allowing your alpaca
to move forward relaxed and free in
movement.
While you are in the Ring
-
Pay attention to your alpaca but also
pay attention to the judge and ring
steward. Follow their direction and
cues.
-
Make sure your alpaca is set-up on all
4's squarely. Don't' worry about trying
to conceal a conformational trait by
setting them sideways when the judge is
asking for a front forward set. Chances
are the judge has already seen the
conformational trait during their stroll
into the ring.
-
Have a good hold on your alpaca BEFORE
the judge approaches you. If you
don't feel you can secure the alpaca
yourself, have another exhibitor take
that alpaca into the ring for you. If
you feel you may need some assistance,
make contact with the ring steward
alerting them to your need BEFORE the
alpaca is examined by the judge. The
ring stewards are there to help but not
to be your handler. If an alpaca moves
around too much, its harder to make a
fair assessment and it may effect
their placement. (2006 AOBA Show Rules -
